Blue Frontier Fund

about | blue frontier fund (BFF)

Blue Frontier Fund is an international impact venture capital initiative jointly developed by UMITO Partners and Beyond Impact.
The fund invests in early-stage deep-tech companies across Europe and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) that are enabling the transition to a regenerative blue economy. By restoring ocean health and strengthening resilience, we support technologies that drive both environmental regeneration and industrial transformation.
We define this model as the New Blue Economy—an economic system where ecosystem restoration and economic growth reinforce one another.

Investment Theme :
Driving Ocean Resilience and Industrial Transformation through deep tech Innovation

We invest at the intersection of climate, biodiversity, and food systems, with the ocean as a central platform for transformation.
By combining marine biological functions with advanced technologies, we move beyond impact mitigation toward systems that actively regenerate ecosystems while enabling scalable, sustainable industries.

Investment Focus :
Three Pillars of the New Blue Economy

1. B2B Blue Bio & Food Tech
Alternative proteins, novel nutrition, and ocean-derived ingredients
We invest in companies developing sustainable alternative marine proteins, microalgae-based solutions, fermentation-enabled seafood alternatives, and upcycled ocean ingredients.
These innovations leverage synthetic biology, precision fermentation, and marine bio-resources to produce food, ingredients, aquanutrients, and biomaterials—either derived from or decoupled from traditional ocean extraction. The result is a transition from extractive models to regenerative production systems.
2. Marine Bio-Materials Tech
Next-generation materials from marine bio-resources
We invest in ocean-derived biomaterials, including seaweed-based materials and marine biopolymers, that replace fossil-based and environmentally harmful materials.
These technologies enable scalable substitution across packaging, chemicals, and industrial materials, combining sustainability with performance and cost competitiveness.
3. Ocean Climate Tech
Carbon cycles, ecosystem restoration, and water systems
We invest in technologies that harness ocean functions to deliver carbon sequestration, emissions reduction, and environmental restoration.
This includes blue carbon systems, marine monitoring, pollution removal, maritime decarbonization, and ecosystem restoration. We also support innovations that convert CO₂ into valuable outputs, positioning the ocean as a scalable climate solution while accelerating biodiversity recovery.

Investment Approach

We focus on enabling technologies across these domains, including synthetic biology, precision fermentation, algae and seaweed biotechnology, and ocean monitoring systems.
By combining Beyond Impact’s global investment track record with UMITO Partners’ deep marine expertise and on-the-ground networks across fisheries and coastal regions, we deliver a differentiated model that integrates competitive financial returns with measurable ocean impact.

background

Why the Ocean, Why Now

The ocean underpins climate stability, biodiversity, and global food security. Yet its resilience is rapidly declining due to five converging pressures: rising greenhouse gas emissions, coastal ecosystem degradation, overfishing, declining water quality, and marine plastic pollution. These forces are accelerating ecosystem loss, reducing fish stocks, and undermining the ocean’s capacity to sustain future food systems.
At the same time, the ocean economy—excluding tourism, shipping, and oil & gas—represents a USD 750 billion global market with significant untapped potential. Advances in synthetic biology, precision fermentation, algae-based systems, and biomaterials are enabling sustainable alternatives across food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and materials, driving a new wave of ocean-driven industrial transformation.
However, ocean-related technologies remain severely underfunded globally, including in Europe and Japan. Despite their high dependence on marine resources, startups face structural barriers to capital, industry access, and commercialization. This gap between technological potential and capital allocation represents a critical bottleneck—and a compelling opportunity for investment.

A Cross-Regional Platform for Ocean Innovation

Blue Frontier Fund bridges this gap by:

  • Investing in technologies addressing ocean-related global challenges
  • Supporting real-world deployment in fisheries and coastal ecosystems across Japan and APAC
  • Connecting European scientific innovation with Asia’s market scale

Through this model, we operate as a cross-regional platform linking capital, science, and implementation.

UMITO partners × beyond impact

Blue Frontier Fund is jointly managed by UMITO Partners and Beyond Impact in a fully integrated partnership. The two firms share equal responsibility across the entire investment lifecycle, including investment thesis development, deal sourcing across APAC and Europe, investment committee decision-making, impact measurement and reporting, as well as fundraising and investor relations.
By combining UMITO Partners’ deep, field-level understanding of ocean systems with Beyond Impact’s global investment expertise, the fund operates as a uniquely positioned platform for ocean-focused deep-tech investment.

UMITO partners

UMITO Partners is a Tokyo-based ocean sustainability pioneer dedicated to driving the transition toward a nature-positive ocean. The company operates across blue finance consulting, sustainable fisheries projects, MSC/ASC certification support, its consumer brand—UMITO SEAFOOD—and new business development support, all to create systemic change and realize a blue economy. As Japan's first B Corp-certified ocean sustainability firm, UMITO Partners was honored with the Good Design Awards in 2024 and 2025, and was selected as one of "THE REGENERATIVE COMPANY 2025" by WIRED Japan. Guided by its purpose, "Harmonize Sustainable Ties with the Ocean," the company strives to align business viability with positive environmental impact.
