HIROSHIMA ROPE GROWN OYSTER
FISHERY IMPROVEMNT PROJECT (FIP)
FIP launched based on market need
Japanese Consumer’s Co-operative Union, a national federation of consumer cooperatives that has been proactive about offering environmentally friendly products to consumers, co-launched this FIP in 2021 in collaboration with Hiroshima Oyster producers and processing company with the goal of obtaining MSC certification.
Hiroshima boasts the largest oyster production in Japan. Approximately 60% of its oyster comes from rope-grown oyster fishery, an operation that utilizes natural nutrients from the ocean for its growth.
This was the first oyster FIP in Japan to aim toward MSC certification.
