WAKAYAMA NACHIKATSUURA ALBACORE TUNA
LONGLINE FISHERY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (FIP)
Japan's first albacore tuna FIP led by tuna broker
Nachikatsuura town in Wakayama prefecure boasts the largest landing volume of fresh tuna in Japan.
Yamasa Wakiguchi Suisan, a tuna broker that was founded in 1897, partnered with No. 78 Kaioumaru, an offshore longline fishing vessel that lands fresh tuna at Nachikatsuura, to launch a FIP with the aim to realize a sustainable albacore tuna longline fishery.
With support from Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU Co., Ltd., the project was launched in 2017. UMITO Partners developed and coordinated the FIP improvement workplan and provided scientific support throughout the project.
