MIYAGI KESENNUMA BLUE SHARK & SWORDFISH SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES PROJECT (FIP)
Transmitting the ambition of fishermen working toward sustainability to the world
Overview
Kesennuma, a city in Miyagi prefecture, ranks first in Japan for both fresh swordfish and blue shark landings.
Although it has been reported by a scientific committee that blue shark and swordfish stocks are not overfished nor depleted, there is an international demand for their protection as a fishery resource, responsibility for sustainable use and transparency in its fishing industry.
Therefore, this project was launched to widely disseminate both domestically and globally that swordfish and blue shark caught by this region’s inshore longline fishing vessels operate with careful attention to its stock statuses.
As such, the Kesennuma Distant-water Fishery Cooperative (KDFC) is leading the effort to obtain MSC certification with the aim of contributing to the establishment of domestic and global sustainable fisheries through stabilization and continuation of its fisheries.
