HOKKAIDO TOMAMAE GIANT PACIFIC OCTOPUS
BARREL FLOWING FISHERY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (FIP)
Young fisherman leader launches Hokkaido's first FIP with local sustainability in mind
Tomamae, a small coastal town of about 3,000 residents located in the Rumoi area of Hokkaido prefecture, boasts second largest landing of mizudako (giant Pacific octopus) in the prefecture.
This FIP is led by a young local fisherman that hopes barrel-flowing fishing, a traditional octopus fishing method of the region, continues to thrive for future generations.
UMITO Partners provides advice based on scientific knowledge, formulation and implementation of improvement workplan, management and coordination of the FIP.
We connected the FIP fisher with a highly regarded chef in Tokyo to implement a collaborative projecet to maximize quality and value of FIP octopus.
We plan to continue to provide distribution support, including product development, and co-design a community sustainability development project centered around the town’s fishing industry.
