KUMAMOTO AMAKUSA RED SEAM BREAM
AQUACULTURE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (AIP)
Second ASC certified red seabream aquaculture in Japan
Amakusa City is an important production area for farmed red seabream in Kumamoto, a prefecture that has the second largest production of red seabream in Japan.
This AIP was launched in 2020 with the goal of enhancing responsible aquaculture operation as well as domestic and global competitiveness by obtaining ASC certification.
In 2021, Urata Suisan became the second red seabream farm in Japan to obtain ASC certification.
Improvement actions during the AIP included monitoring of impact applied to surrounding ecosystem and habitat, sustainability assessment of feed and smolt, fish disease management, and establishment of social respnsibility policy for the fish farm.
UMITO Partners developed and coordinated the AIP work plan as well as provided scientific support.
